Halong Bay is the golden jewel of northeast Vietnam. Situated in one part of the Tonkin Gulf, Halong bay dazzles with its effervescent sunsets and stunning karst formations. Nguyen Trai, a renowned cultural enthusiast, dubbed the bay as ‘the wonder standing in the heavens’. Halong Bay was included in the World Natural Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1994.

Halong Bay is the capital of Quang Ninh province. Bai Tu Long is the home of the vibrant city in Halong. The bay is situated 160km northeast of Hanoi. Halong City is has two parts which are East and West Halong. East Halong, Hon Gai, contains a majority of the industries and official buildings. East Halong is connected to West Halong, Baichay, by a bridge. Baichay is known as the tourism hub of West Halong.

Halong Bay is connected to the Tonkin Gulf and is also a part of the sea area near Halong City, Cam Pha town, and some parts of Van Don Island. Halong Bay has an area that spans 1,553 km₂ which includes 1,969 islands. 989 islands have been named based on shape, history, and legend while 980 other islands remain unnamed. The islands found on Halong Bay are categorized into two kinds the limestone islands and schist islands. These two island types are commonly found in two main locations in the southeast (in Bai Tu Long) and the southwest (in Halong Bay). Halong Bay is situated in the northern part of Vietnam which makes its weather unique in the region. The province experiences four seasons namely spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Tourists can enjoy Halong Bay year round the best time to visit this wondrous work of nature is in the months of April to October and December to February. During winter, visitors have the chance to enjoy cold and foggy weather that adds to the mystique of the thousands of islands on the bay.

Halong Bay has hundreds of islands and islets, majestic views, and renowned caves. The UNESCO Heritage site has more than 700 islands and covers an area of 434 km₂. The more renowned islands in the bay are Dau Go Islet in the west, Cong Tay to the east, and Ba Dam Lake to the south.

The creativity of nature led to the formation of the magnificent beauty of Halong Bay. The bay is not only known for its beautiful rock formations but also renowned and historically significant locations such as Van Don, Bach Dang River, and Bai Tho Mountain.

There are also archaeologists who conduct research at Xich Tho, Thoi Gieng, Dong Mang, and Soi Nhu. These sites prove that Halong is one of the first places where humankind lived in. Halong is also home to a diverse array of ecosystems such as coral reefs, mangroves, and tropical rainforests. The bay is also home to hundreds of animal species and rare animals that are indigenous to the region. Once you set foot on Halong Bay, you will be whisked away to a dream land. There are numerous islands described as mythical figures, Dragon Island and an old man fishing, Ong La Vong Islet. There are other breathtaking islands and islets such as Trong Mai Islet, Canh Buom Islet, and Dinh Huong Islet.

At the center of the rock formations and islands, there exist magnificent caves namely Dau Go Cave, Thien Cung Cave, Tam Cung Cave, and Sung Sot Cave. Walking inside these wondrous caves triggers the imagination of its visitors. The rock formations take on different shapes of animals, mythical creatures, and historical items. During the 18th session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO held in Thailand in December 17th, 1994, Halong Bay was recognized as a World Natural Heritage Site. In November 2000, Halong Bay earned another recognition from UNESCO, this time as a World Natural Heritage for geomorphology. Mr. Bernard Weber, who founded the New7Wonders, declared that Halong Bay be a part of the New Seven Wonders of the World in April 27th at the My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi.
