Ho Chi Minh, Ho Chi Minh Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh Travel Guide, Tours, Map, Photos

Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, is the beating heart of Vietnam. With a population of almost 9 million people, Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in the country. Ho Chi Minh is dubbed as the ‘Diamond of the Far East’, kthe same moniker bestowed upon Bangkok or Hong Kong. The city is vibrant with many stalls both big and small, motorcycle whirring about, and charming towns such as Di An, Thu Dau Mot, and Bien Hoa.

During its early days, the bustling city was only a small fishing village inhabited by the Khmers. The small village was given as a dowry to the Vietnamese when a Vietnamese princess married a Khmer prince to stop the pillaging and invasion of Khmer villages. During French colonial times, Ho Chi Minh underwent many changes. The city landscape transformed as it merged French and Vietnamese influence in architecture and design. The city emerged as a beautiful and charming city with French-inspired buildings and artwork. After April 30, 1975, the city was taken under the control of the North Vietnamese. The North Vietnamese government changed the name of the city from Saigon to Ho Chi Minh.

Ho Chi Minh is a vibrant city with 24 districts. As a rising economy, the city has combined the design and lifestyle of the West and Chinese, without losing its soul. Aside from the rising economy and modern lifestyle, the city is being recognized as a tourist destination. Nearby destinations such as Cu Chi in South Vietnam lures millions of tourists each year. There are plenty of places to see while in the city, well-known places like the Reunification Palace, the Municipal Theatre, City Hall, Opera House, City People’s Court, Notre Dame Cathedral, State Bank Office, and City Post Office are all main tourist attractions in the city. These structures reflect the French influence left by the former colonizers.

Ho Chi Minh is also home to a number of entertainment venues and museums namely the Museum of Vietnamese History, Revolutionary Museum, Ho Chi Minh City Museum, Museum of Southern Women, Museum of Southeastern Armed Forces, Nha Rong Memorial House, Museum of Fine Arts, Cu Chi Underground Tunnels, The Dam Sen Tourist and Cultural Park, Saigon Zoo, Suoi Tien Amusement and Culture Park, and Botanical Gardens.

Staying in District One creates an unforgettable experience while in Ho Chi Minh. All of the streets and alleys in the city are filled with lush trees and friendly locals that sell all sorts of drinks and affordable products. Purchase items at the Ben Thanh Market or enjoy the stunning architecture of the Notre Dame Cathedral and City Post Office. District One is the perfect place for the shopping addict because of the many stalls and markets.

The central location of the southern city of Ho Chi Minh makes it an important transportation hub to other provinces in the country. The inflow and outflow of transport in the city provides plenty of opportunities to develop the tourism and economy of the eastern and western area of Southern Vietnam.
